Pound of Flesh

Syd

Plucking words with precision
Laying them out on the screen
Nurturing and comforting
Like sweet cotton candy daydreams

Relentlessly writing about oneself
Raw emotions and the pain they bring
Like a tattoo artist practicing
Using the last space on his limbs

Loosening the leash on verses
Running wild without control
Fibre optic nerve endings protruding
Like an extension of one's soul

Poems can be picked apart and dissected
Or overlooked on the shelf
Sharing work can be like sharing needles
Detrimental to one's health

Have respect for fellow artists
See how their cogs and gears mesh
They've bared their teeth
And exposed their soul...

They've paid their pound of flesh

A great title reminiscent of Shylock in the Merchant of Venice. Well written

Thank you so much Sorenbarret. Yes, that's where the title is taken from. Thanks for reading and commenting.

          Brilliant syd
I love the line with works and needles
Gave me my fix for the day
Many addicts call the needles their works
          Superb

          • Syd

Thanks peto, yes I've read many books on drug addiction. I reference the hypodermic kit as "works" on my story poem Joe & Benny a few weeks ago. I hope you've now had your poetic fix for the day.

Cheers for your kind comment. Much appreciated - Syd πŸ„

It can be an issue, Syd.
It is the poet’s choice to bring their β€˜Raw emotions and the pain’ to a space such as this. They need to be responsible for their own health.
As a side issue, I have taken a contributor’s position seriously and with the best empathy I can rustle up, only to find their agony was an imaginative creation.
We are in the middle of a poetic jungle here.

Hi Dave, I totally understand your comment. I have commented in the same way you've just described. This write however, is inspired by something I witnessed on another site (as I do get around a bit) I saw snide comments about a fellow poets work and I thought to myself "if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing" as someone has put a lot of work into this, and that’s all it's about really. I'll not be bothering with that site myself anymore.

Cheers for stopping by and commenting Dave. Very much appreciated. I hope you're keeping well mate πŸ‘

most welcome - it was my pleasure..

Always think, there's criticism, and there's criticism. Most poets put their heart and soul into their work, and if their poem doesn't resonate with you, find one that does, but don't slate poets work for being brave enough to put it out there.
Like the pound of flesh analogy.

I totally agree Paul. Thanks for stopping by, reading and commenting.

Syd, this really hit me hard. There's something beautifully vulnerable about this...the joy of creating standing right beside the risk of sharing it. That balance feels incredibly honest. Wonderful write, my friend. πŸŒΉπŸ–€πŸ™πŸ•―οΈπŸ¦β€β¬›

Thank you so much Tristan, it was written from the soul and past experiences.

I'll take your comment as a huge compliment.

                      Thank you 😊
