The boy with the black eyes had no smile
His father didn't treat him as a boy,
A boy that needed to be shown love
A boy that needed to be held, some
He cried into his pillow at night
Listening to the crash and bang of midnight
When the clock struck one,
He knew it wasn't fun
So the boy kept crying
His mother nowhere to be seen
When she was, her eyes were blue
Unlike the boys black and dark
His mother's had a shimmer above her cheek
no spark
As the boy got older and worked in the field
His father paid no attention
But to the women of the night
Who seemed to disappear
Always at night, out of sight
The boy got wiser put on a blazer
Decided he wanted more than the father could give
He left on a train, with dreams on his brain
And gave his father a fright
All in the midst of morning light
The boy with the black eyes grew a smile
It took a long while, but he knew in time
That he could be happier making ends meat
On the other side of the country
Silently knowing it was not an easy feat
12 months later he met his wife
Stunning green eyes, the love of his life
Now the man with the black eyes has purpose
Knowing what he had gone through
Was all worth it.
