Helplessness

Helplessness

~ Deepak Vohra

Last night

Someone was killed

No breaking news

no trending post

not even a whisper.

The birds

that usually flood the morning with songs

have gone silent too

as if the sky itself

has forgotten how to sing.

Who will speak now?

And what is left to say?

Everyone is running

breathless, exhausted

simply trying to earn

their daily bread.

The windows stay shut

trembling in fear.

Every breath hangs in the air,

waiting, wondering--

what happens next?

My city

drowning in the deafening noise of silence

is somehow forced

to keep living.

Heavy, this poem speaks to the powerless feel of a modern world crowded with people considered numbers where each must spend all their effort to survive with no time for regard of others. It is cold and a concrete asphalt jungle with no room for empathy. Nicely written a fave

the world appears to lack basic empathy now
