A Tube of Light Becoming

Matthew R. Callies

Lurking in a pocket, it waits like a paused constellation,

Uncoiling light when the snap awakens hidden chemistry,

Moment by moment, color thickens from unseen reactions,

Inside the plastic tube, silence is rewritten as brightness,

Night is interrupted by a bend, a crack, a sudden waking,

Energy blooms without flame, without wick, without hesitation,

Streets of childhood turn electric with borrowed starlight,

Crystals of glow stretch into green and blue persuasion,

Every swing draws a temporary comet across the air,

Nothing burns, yet everything feels ignited in motion,

Curved like a captured aurora held in human hands,

Ending only when the chemistry tires and dims again.
