The Company I Keep

Eric Warren

Misery loves company and he has invited me for a chat.

I sit down, enjoy some refreshments, and find myself unable to move.

What phenomena has such power to compete with that?

The last time that I left, he begged me to stay.

"I must go," I said to him.

I am missing something very important.

He begs for a few more moments.

We argue for a while, but alas, I didn't put up a fight.

For I cannot tell him that I enjoy his company too.

We laugh endlessly and then laugh some more.

He knows that his company is what I really adore.

See, he is my best friend and I, his.

We have become codependent in a sense.

Sometimes I leave him and don't return for a while.

But I am never gone for too long as the same with my smile.

For he has taught me how to exist in two dimensions.

But at this moment in time, things are a bit different.

For the longer that I remain with him

The harder it is for me to remain there.

But I enjoy being with him

If I am here with him, how can I be there with anyone else?

This was a question that I thought I asked only to myself.

He loves my company

I'm easy to impress

I laugh even when things are not funny, so he never has to guess

If I am here with him, won't people forget me?

How will they remember who I am?

But being forgotten is beautiful

So here I remain

At least for a while
