Everything But One Thing
It began with a question,
contained in just three words:
“What is truth?”
So he opened a book
and found the darkness of a cave.
He opened another
and found thousands of unnamed things,
waiting to be named.
He read another
and arrived at doubt,
then read another
and fell into the abyss of uncertainty,
and then another—
which led him to a room
whose doors
Reason itself
had locked.
From some, he learned
to accept
what lay beyond his power.
From others, he learned
to seek peace.
From another, he learned
to question every answer.
He read another
and questioned the world.
He read another
and questioned freedom.
He read another
and questioned the question itself.
Then he read many others
who said that meaning
was hidden beneath the words,
and continued reading others
who said
there was no meaning at all.
He read another
and tried to let go.
He studied yet another
and tried
not to try.
He continued studying
and tried
to become a better human being.
He studied himself,
and reached no conclusion.
The house of his mind
had turned into
a mountain of books,
with bookmarks like tiny flags
raised in the land
of conquered ignorance.
At midnight, he whispered:
“I gave ten years of my life
to discover
how little I know.”
The room was silent.
Then, from the depths of his being,
the final question arose:
“Why?”
He stared at the ceiling.
He had read everything,
except the answer.
So he closed the books.
For the first time in years,
he no longer asked:
“What is this?
What does it mean?”
He simply sat there,
tired,
confused,
and utterly unable
to stop thinking
همهچیز الا یک چیز
،آغازش یک پرسش بود
:در دو واژه جا میگرفت
"حقیقت چیست؟"
پس کتابی گشود
.و تاریکی غاری را یافت
کتابی دیگر گشود
،و هزاران نامناگرفته یافت
.در انتظار نامگذاری
کتابی دیگر خواند
،و به تردید رسید
سپس دیگری را خواند
،و به ورطهٔ عدمقطعیت افتاد
،و بعد دیگری
او را به اتاقی برد
که درهایش را
خودِ خِرَد
.قفل کرده بود
از برخی آموخت بپذیرد
آنچه خارج از توانش است
از برخی دیگر آموخت
.در پیِ آرامش باشد
از دیگری آموخت
هر پاسخی را
.به پرسش بگیرد
دیگری را خواند
.و جهان را به پرسش کشید
دیگری را خواند
.و آزادی را به پرسش کشید
دیگری را خواند
و خودِ پرسش را
.به پرسش کشید
سپس بسیارانِ دیگری را خواند
که میگفتند معنا
،زیرِ واژه پنهان است
و به خواندنِ دیگرانی ادامه داد
که میگفتند
.اصلاً معنایی در کار نیست
دیگری را خواند
.و کوشید رها کند
دیگری را مطالعه کرد
و کوشید
.کوشش نکند
به مطالعه ادامه داد
و تلاش کرد
.انسان بهتری شود
،خودش را مطالعه کرد
.و به هیچ نتیجهای نرسید
خانۀ ذهنش تبدیل شده بود
،به کوهی از کتاب
با نشانکهایی شبیه پرچمهای کوچک
.برافراشته در سرزمینِ جهلِ فتحشده
:نیمهشب، زمزمه کرد
ده سال از عمرم را دادم
تا بفهمم
.چقدر کم میدانم
.اتاق ساکت بود
،سپس، از ژرفای درونش
:آخرین پرسش برخاست
"چرا؟"
.به سقف خیره شد
،همهچیز را خوانده بود
.جز پاسخ را
.پس کتابها را بست
،برای نخستین بار پس از سالها
:دیگر نپرسید
این چیست؟"
"به چه معناست؟
،فقط همانجا نشست
،خسته
،سردرگم
و کاملاً ناتوان
از فکر نکردن
