The wildfire heart

Natalie Heisey

They say I’m too loud, too wild, too hard to love
But I burn through every dream I ever held up
My choice with yours was a wildfire in the dark
And I cried my own tears in the back seat of my heart

I walked through the heat till the feeling went numb
Buried my faith where the cold shadows come
I gave my trust to the dead, let the silence decide
Now the sun hits my skin and it burns from the inside

I got no pain left in me, I spent it all to live
No more apologies, I got nothing left to give
I found my voice, turned it into a bad choice
Now I’m burning inside like the sun through the noise
You pull the trigger on my grenade and laugh when it blooms
Whispers in the dark said it was all lies in the room

I asked for no rush, just let the truth come slow
Strip me down gentle, let me be known
But you kept on reaching for the weakest part of me
Now my ribs are a shoreline where the storm learned to breathe
My tattoos read the losses, wild lines on my skin
Every scar is a chapter of the mess I’ve been in

I got no pain left in me, I spent it all to live
No more apologies, I got nothing left to give
I found my voice, turned it into a bad choice
Now I’m burning inside like the sun through the noise
You pull the trigger on my grenade and laugh when it blooms
Whispers in the dark said it was all lies in the room

I turned my pain to armor, let the hard days show
What once broke me open only made me glow
Your smile used to mend me, now it cuts even more
Got my heart racing like footsteps on a boarded-up Floors I ride with the ashes and the truth in my chest
Half alive, half haunted, still I give you my best
I’m too loud, too wild, but I’m honest in the flame
If love’s gonna kill me, I’ll still say my name.
