For the majority of people feeling normal means feeling
Happy or
Peaceful or
Calm or
Content
Yet for some reason my normal is
Numb
It feels like TV static in my mind
The sound crickets
Playing where emotion should be
To be emotionless is to be normal
For me
Yet not for others
If I were to be habitually happy
I would riddled unable to truly appreciate
Moments of pure joy
If I was permanently at peace
I would lack the muse I write for
In moments of great displeasure
If I was continually content
Or continuously calm
I would be incapable of growing in my discomfort
The ability to return to a stat of numbness,
Though occasionally exhausting or mildly melancholic,
Has been of great benefit when trying to keep a level head
I’ve learned to accept my numbness,
No matter how unnatural it might be to some,
With open arms.
Because sometimes
To remove the heavy chains of emotion,
Is to be free.
