Gusts of cool wind
Gush past me,
Go right through my hair
And around my body.
My feet are buried in the sand,
Then submerged in the cold water
That keeps coming back,
Every now and then.
The water stretches as far as it can,
And I try to look as far as I could,
Trying to guess where it all ends
And the sky starts to rise.
The water brings me a souvenir.
So long then, for soon it will be far gone.
The souvenir is mankind's biggest mistake,
For water never keeps what it doesn't own.
I am on a beach on a deserted island.
The sky is clear, the stars are bright.
They shine, but no brighter than the Moon,
Which is much closer here than it ever would be.
I see the spots people talk about.
I see the craters as well.
I see the waves rising.
I see how it can be concerning.
All the animals gather here.
They are all around me,
And they all surround me.
And all the predators people talk about
Are here.
But they don't seem to mind
My presence there.
They don't perceive me as a
Threat.
And amidst it all,
They begin to shine.
They all look up to the stars
And the Moon.
I see hope,
Even in their eyes.
If they can,
Then so can we.
Just then, I hear a sound
Coming from the sky.
I look up
And witness the sky falling.
I see the navy blue melt
And fade just a little.
I see the paint.
I see it coming off.
The wave rises.
It goes so high.
The sky is falling.
They are changing.
They are changing places.
I see it now.
Now I see it.
I see where the water ends
And where the sky begins.
Now the stars are in the water,
But the pretty Moon is still up, pretty high,
Holding the water up,
Keeping down the sky.
In that moment,
I realised
That I had done it.
I touched the sky.
The animals didn't panic.
To them, it was a regular sight.
But you should've seen my face.
It was an impossible delight.
It all happened in such haste.
It was too much for my appetite.
But it didn't go to waste.
I let it happen; I did not fight.
For I witnessed myself
Lifting off the ground,
Free-falling in the sky.
What felt like music
That blessed my ears
Was the sound of stars,
And the sounds of the unknown.
And what seemed like rain
Was the water seeping through.
The big blue whale
Jumps out of the water
And starts to fly.
I look around
To find more of me
From a different time.
It was not a dream.
Shame that no one would believe me.
"Why does that matter?"
Asked the tiger.
"And who are these people
Whom you care about so much?
Anything that they haven't seen
Would always be called a lie."

- Comment from author about the poem: I've never been to a beach so it started with me trying to explain how it would feel like to be at a beach but in the process of I writing it I saw the irony and delved into the absurdity of it all.

A beautiful surreal poem that reminded me of the movie The life of Pi. My favorite line was "For water never keeps what it doesn't own." Nicely done
