Watching Over You

Paul Gerard Reed

"Sleep tight, sleep tight
You know everything is alright
For tonight I will be here watching over you"
- 'Watching Over You' by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, 1977

If only I could watch over you again
But that course has been run,
As the moonlight through the window pane
Has disappeared with the sun;

And when your eyes closed
Your deams through the night would stroll,
Life and hopes were recomposed
I loved my guardian angel role;

But now you are all grown up
The moon is covered with cloud,
No cup of youth from which to sup
No bedtime stories to read out loud;

Now only memories crowd my mind
I suppose I set you on your way,
On the way to being loving and kind
The dreams are over, but it's a new day.
