What is a sunset

Karabo Tsotetsi

What is a sunset?

To many, it is the going down of the sun.

To some - it would be this mesmerising mixture of red, orange and yellow.
But to me: a sunset is more than just a voice that bellows without a sound.

It is akin to a crown bestowed on the Earth.
The glory of a thousand suns. Its beauty that to a new life birthed.

There is no one better than the other.
For the Father of all Fathers created this wonder, for us to gaze at and admire.
But also to think about what might have transpired for the creation of this beautiful amazement.

I ask again, what is a sunset?

Is it a gap in time, that gives us a moment to reset?
Is it as precious as a diamond being mined
From the deepest pits you can find?

Or has it become a component used for our time-keeping
That we don't see the true meaning
Of the luminous rays gleaming and engulfing everything it touches?

How the light sometimes seeps through the leaves of the three
Or reflecting off of the waves of the sea?

The answer?

A sunset is our daily wonder of the world.
Our escape from the wars and contention that unfurl.

A sunset is a pearl, a treasure to be buried in the sand
so it lays, undisturbed.

It is a memory to make with those you love.
Like a friend, or a spouse or someone you trust.

It cannot be defined as one single thing
For it means many things, but the feeling it brings
Lasts a lifetime...for those who take the time to stop
And hear it sing.
