Miles Without A Destination

Anthony Hanible

The road goes on

Thin as a whisper

Cutting through dust

And half remembered towns

It carries no promise

No map

No name

Just the hum of distance

And the ache of going

I walk it anyway

Past broken fences

Past the ghosts of signs

That once pointed somewhere

The sky forgets me

The wind keeps its secrets

Even the sun seems unsure

If I’m worth the light

But the road

The road keeps stretching

Like a thought you can’t finish

Like a dream that won’t wake

And maybe that’s the truth

Some paths aren’t meant

To deliver you anywhere

They’re meant to strip you clean

Until you finally see

What you were carrying

So I follow it

Mile after mile

Into the quiet

Into the blur

Into the soft unraveling

Of nowhere
