May I Read My Mind To You

Anthony Hanible

May I read my mind to you

Not whole

Not smooth

But in fragments

That fall

Like glass

Remembering

Its break

A door

Half open

Light leaking

Like a confession

That forgot

Its words

A river

Split

Carrying pieces

Of a childhood

I only recall

In flashes

A stone

A scream

A hand letting go

Too soon

A tower

Cracked

Silence dripping

Down its sides

Like wax

From a candle

That never learned

To burn steady

An animal

Unnamed

Pacing the border

Of thought

Leaving prints

In the dust

Of old fears

A mask

Tilted

One eye missing

The other

Watching me

From the inside

May I read my mind to you

In symbols

Scattered

Shifting

Pieces that refuse

To form a single truth

But still insist

On meaning

A lantern

Flickering

A shadow

Leaning toward it

A spark

Trying to rise

Through the fracture

If you stay

I’ll gather the shards

Slow

Careful

And let you see

How even broken light

Still remembers

How to glow
