Lonely is the Man

Michael A. McGuire

The thousand pains of a lonely man's
life, sketch tiny, dismal patterns in his
soul, that will later comprise an eternity
of strife!

Hollowness of heart for love found none,
he suffers silently in the taunting rain,
softly whispering a prayer of hope, then
looks toward the heavens, and is gone.

0, why must we bear those backbreaking
chains of detraction entitled loneliness
for all to gaze upon and ridicule? The
undeniable emptiness in our lives?

When true passion meets on divided
streets, why do we unconsciously try to
kill it with suicidal knives?

All my life I've been alone! Walking
through ebony clouds of chaos, till all
my passion for living became nil and my
lust for death was sadly made known!

And now as I prepare myself for Death's
desolate bed, only one thought runs painfully
through my head. Lonely are those
who live for themselves, for their heart
knows not love and in their soul, misery
dwells.

No life liveth a man who shares not his
thoughts or love, for until he releases
himself from Hell on Earth, his spirit
shall never know peace in Heaven above!

This is a heavy, unflinching portrait of loneliness, where the isolation becomes almost physical—a chain wrapped around the soul. The final turn toward connection gives the darkness a little damn light, suggesting that love shared is what finally breaks the prison.
