American Executor: James K. Polk

Matthew R. Callies

A promise made before the people’s sight,

A measured course he swore he would pursue;

The office calls with purpose clear and bright,

A chosen path no doubt can quite undo.

The Congress waits to see what he will do,

For plans once spoken now demand command—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

No crown empowers what he has to claim,

Yet will and policy together stand;

The presidency takes a sharper frame—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

The western horizon calls his gaze ahead,

The continent a question yet unresolved;

The lines of power, once uncertainly spread,

Are drawn by choices boldly now evolved.

The Oregon dispute must be dissolved,

A boundary settled through a careful brand—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

The territory gained extends the shore,

The republic’s reach expands across the land;

The map is changed as never done before—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

The southern border becomes a storming sea,

Where claims and nations meet in force and flame;

A conflict comes despite the hope of peace,

And history records the war by name.

The armies march beneath the nation’s claim,

While executive decisions guide the stand—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

The victories bring new lands into the fold,

Yet questions rise that none can countermand;

For every gain, a deeper wound is told—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

The territories won now force debate,

For freedom’s future hangs upon their fate;

The expansion he pursued reshapes the state,

And brings the sectional divide to wait.

The presidency proves both strong and great,

Yet power leaves a burden in its wake—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

A single term completes the course he set,

No second reign to lengthen his command;

He leaves the office with the goals fulfilled—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

So stands the chief who promised, then achieved,

A presidency of purpose and design;

He took the path his supporters had believed,

And made the nation’s boundaries align.

Yet every triumph bears a deeper sign,

For choices made can echo through the land—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

The office learns that power need not roar,

Nor rest upon a personality grand;

A mission clearly chosen may transform—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.

Envoi:

O keeper of a vision firmly planned,

You stretched the borders by a steady hand;

Through victory, cost, and questions yet unmanned,

You showed the reach of presidential command—

He shapes the nation with a determined hand.
