Different Worlds

Zayaan Ali

The city wakes under a silver sky,

while forests fade and rivers slowly die.

We talk about progress, freedom, peace, and light,

but still trade our quiet hearts for screens at night.

We teach kids how to win every race,

but forget to teach them kindness and grace.

We reach the stars and map the skies above,

yet miss the person standing right in front of us.

And maybe there’s a world we haven’t made,

where no one’s worth is bought or traded.

Maybe it’s not so far away or out of sight—

maybe it’s just inside us, choosing right.

We’ve learned to build, to conquer, to know

but not always how to care as we grow.

And maybe the future isn’t lost or far—
it starts wherever better people are.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I,Zayaan Ali, am a student who is currently studying in highschool. This poem explores the contrast between the world we live in and the world we could create. I wrote it after thinking about how technology and progress have changed humanity, while kindness, equality, and connection are sometimes forgotten. The poem is a reminder that an ideal world does not have to exist somewhere else.It can begin with the choices we make today.

A reminder that progress and technology are not enough if we forget kindness, nature, and human connection.
