Nails of Memory

Nails of Memory

Memories of the past are sometimes like nails
protruding from the smooth surface of forgetting;
whenever time’s hand
brushes against that wall,
they wound us once again—
not to make us long for what is gone,
but to remind us
that a part of our lives
was wasted somewhere in the past.

There is no regret,
no longing for the past;
only a distant image
lingering in some corner of the mind,
without making the heart tremble.

The past is the past;
neither a dream nor a wish,
only a part of the road
we have traveled,
and some parts of it—
I wish we had never traveled them.

    A great metaphor again my friend. Nails of memory some driven flat and others protruding that wound from time to time. To pull them might prove difficult and even if possible with out them breaking off would leave a hole and may loosen what they hold. Better to hammer them back in. A wonderful write Soheil
