He had just lost a loved one
His wife of forty years
He sat there in silence
Not holding back his tears
A nurse walked by and saw him
She paused and took a seat
She sat real close to him
She didn't try to be discreet
She sat down and held the hand
Of a man she'd never known
Just so he wouldn't feel
Like he was all alone
She said not a single word
For no words were needed
She was there to comfort him
So he wouldn't feel defeated
She sat there for a while
Then soon she had to go
She leaned down and whispered
I just want you to know
What you're going through right now
Will last for a while
But I believe that over time
You will regain your smile

- Comment from author about the poem: I witnessed this while in the hospital in 2023. I wrote this poem after the nurse left the room. This isn't the first time I witnessed something like this. If there are angels here on earth, I believe they are nurses.
