Slang

Anthony Hanible

Small words

Sharp cut

Street born

Steel gut

Slang slips quick

Like a flick of a switch

A spark in the dark

Where the real ones talk

It bends the air

Breaks it bare

Turns plain speech

To a flare

Coded heat

Low beat

Heartbeat on concrete

Slang is a blade

Made from what we survive

A live wire vibe

That tribes our tongue

Young

Unsung

A drum rung

From the lungs of the block

It’s the knock

On the locked door

The lore of the overlooked

The hook in the book

That never got wrote

Slang is the note

We pass hand to hand

A brand of truth

Too wild for the rules

A jewel in the grime

A rhyme out of time

A sign that the line

Between us

Is ours to define
