The dynamo below our feet

Narayan Gadagkar

What we see on your face

Hills, vales, gorges, rivers, lakes

vast ocean, icy land, the desert sands

what we don’t see inside, the abyss.

An apple with pinched top and bottom

a bulge in centre with an endless spin

You are layered inside like a boiled egg

outer shell, middle white and core yolk.

You are segmented  from top for sure

The three, crust, mantle and the core

Seismicity and gravity brought to the fore

What we can’t probe with a drill bit core.

Thin crust, rigid, broken into tectonic plates

With continental granite and oceanic basalts

Continents as home for humans with divided nations

Between crust and mantle, Moho sets the limits.

Next the molten mantle, thick and bulky

Steady convection currents make it feisty

Geodynamically active, moves the plates

On the crust, pours lava, builds mountains.

Beneath the mantle, till the centre of Earth lies

The Iron-Nickel core, hot, dense with two portions

Outer makes a dynamo and spurs the magnetic field

Solid inner core drives ever the mantle convections

Acts as Earth’s dynamic engine, secures the magnetic field.

Giant Powerhouse hiding deep beneath our feet

Orderly layered segments arranged so neat

The deep, under pressure, boils with intense heat

However, Mother Earth’s face is full of grace; what a fete.

  • Comment from author about the poem: It is a narrative poem on the Earth's interior and the characteristics of each segment, which are quite fascinating to know. The intense pressure and heat reaching up to 6000 degrees Celsius in the inner core reflect how Earth is burning hot inside but so lucidly calm outside.
