Static sounds

Natalie Heisey

I take one step forward, pushed six steps back, Tracing circles in the dust, losing track of the map. Every path I choose leads to the same dead end, Just a hollowed-out rhythm where the broken hearts mend. Born to hold the bottom, that’s the hand I’m dealt, Chasing shadows of a ghost, the sharpest pain I’v felt.

The clock’s ticking loud, but the room’s standing still, Swallowing the bitter taste of a jagged, iron pill. If the sky never clears, why look for the sun?

The race is already over before it’s even begun.

It’s a long way down, but I’m already here,

Fighting out the noise just to face my fears

Static screams, I’m drowning in the sound,

Heart skipping beats, face-first on the ground.

Every face a mask, a glitch in the frame,

Tired of the fight, sick of the pain."

The screen goes black, the signal dies,

Just the silence left behind,

Peace at last for a fractured mind.

The static hums a hollow tune,

A digital ghost in a vacant room.

Lines blur out where the shadows creep,

Cold, sharp stings that cut too deep.

My chest is hollow, a drum for the ache,

How much more can this fragile pulse take

"Static screams, I’m drowning in the sound,

Heart skipping beats, face-first on the ground.

Every face a mask, a glitch in the frame,

Tired of the fight, sick of the pain."
