Rest, sweet child.
You walked right past my window pane,
A quiet shadow in the street.
Something was wrong, I felt the pain,
Though time had yet our eyes to meet.
I didn’t know the reason why
An unexplained and heavy chill
Would linger as the days went by,
A sudden silence on the sill.
Then news arrived that stopped my breath—
A gentle soul too soon had flown.
You walked among us after death,
Your spirit lingering, alone.
I do not know why you would roam,
Or why your presence haunted me.
Perhaps you just felt safe at home,
Remembering what used to be.
For you were so much more than space—
A lovely child, a neighbor near,
With youth and kindness on your face,
And gentle words I loved to hear.
You were my friend, who stopped to stay
When afternoons were growing late,
Who kept the lonely hours at bay
To watch me craft and contemplate.
So rest, sweet child. Though you are gone,
And shadows fade in morning light,
Beside my work, your ghost lives on,
A quiet visitor of white.

- Comment from author about the poem: This is a true story. This little girl lived 3 houses away from me, and for a couple of years, she would stop by when I was crafting out front- not every day, but when she did, she would craft with me. She was only 16. She fell 30' to the ground from an abandoned building with her friends on a weekend . Aug 8. May she rest in peace. What a beautiful soul she was. I don't understand why, for some reason, after all the years you lived next door to me, this 1 time you walked by and said hello. Your presence bothered me. I didn't understand until I found out you passed away. It haunts me to this day. It breaks my heart knowing you are no longer with us. Then, to top it all off, my neighbor next door came over to me and told me that he was dying. He's got internal cancer, and he's on hospice care. It broke my heart.

A sad poem and even sadder author's note. Very nicely written in good rhyme and meter it has good flow and the story is most engaging Well done Friendship
A deeply moving elegy, blending grief, tenderness, and the supernatural.
Thank you
You are welcome.
This is a sad one.
Always devastating when its children.
Happened to a friend of mine, his lad fell off a roof.
You never forget them.
Sorry for your neighbour too.
Thank you
A sensitive write F.
Thank you
Oh, Friendship...I am so deeply sorry. Sixteen is heartbreakingly young, and the additional news about your neighbor is so much grief to receive at once. Holding you and both families in my heart. May she rest peacefully. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦⬛
