0, prisoner of the world you created, dost
thou remember the shattered dreams of a broken
child's heart? The freedom that you longed
to have away from those comfortable arms of
security?
What has gone wrong? Why do you cry tears
in the night when the cold truth taps you on
the shoulder and forces you to give in to reality?
The bars, you have welded together and can
never be pried open. The key was forged to fit
no lock and your life has been patterned to feel
nothing but pain!
Even in the midst of multitudes, you stand alone!
Your suffering can be shared by no other, for all the
things you once lived for have Died and can never
be resurrected!!

Deep in its meaning this poem speaks of the hole we dig for ourselves. A lovely write in free verse form it admonishes the modern life as well as the old. Nicely done
There’s a damn bleak sense of self-imprisonment here, with the welded bars and useless key making regret feel physically inescapable. The strongest gut-punch is “Even in the midst of multitudes, you stand alone,” because that isolation feels more painful than the prison itself.
Ah yes - those glorious "angry young man" days. Written when I was 18-19 and in the Marines - Makes sense now, right? Still, a universal theme we all go through, it seems. I've lightened up over the years - my new poems are about cats, ice cream and making fun of my red neck upbringing (OK/TX)
“Even in the midst of multitudes, you stand alone,” - that is the line that stands out even now especially with our smart phones never getting a rest
even in public spaces with no one watching where they're going, paying attention to anything/anyone.
Thanks!
