From years of struggle, tempered by the past,
He takes the chair where commerce seeks its way;
The wounds of conflict slowly fading fast,
The nation enters into broader day.
No crown commands the office he must sway,
Yet greater fields now call his guiding hand—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
The tariff, trade, and industry define
The questions pressing on the public stand;
He builds prosperity through ordered line—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
The islands cry where Spanish banners fly,
And Cuba’s fate becomes a national plea;
The battleships move beneath a troubled sky,
As war arrives across the distant sea.
He acts where conscience and strategy agree,
And sends the nation forth by his command—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
The conflict ends, but peace brings questions more,
For victory leaves a complicated claim;
New territories stand upon the shore,
And empire enters into America’s name—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
The Philippines become the hardest test,
Where independence and authority collide;
The nation’s purpose struggles with unrest,
As rebels rise and American forces ride.
A larger role can no longer be denied,
For power follows where the flag has spanned—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
Hawaii joins the Union’s growing sphere,
And oceans now connect the nation’s fate;
The Pacific draws America near,
As foreign policy expands its weight—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
Abroad, the Open Door marks a course pursued,
A claim that commerce should remain free;
The United States enters world affairs anew,
No longer distant from diplomacy.
The presidency gains authority
Beyond the shores once known and planned—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
At home, prosperity returns again,
Industry rises, markets grow and expand;
The nation’s wealth increases through his reign,
As business finds support from government’s hand—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
Yet power gained brings burdens not foreseen,
And every victory carries questions too;
The flag may shine, yet what does empire mean?
What rights belong to those beneath its view?
The executor must decide what he will do
When destiny extends beyond command—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
And as his life is ended by a shot,
The nation mourns the loss of steady hand;
His death reveals the change his era brought—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
So stands the twenty-fifth in history’s line,
A president who changed the nation’s place;
He saw America’s horizons widen,
And carried power into a global space.
The office gained a new and larger face,
A role no future chief could quite disband—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
And from his term the modern age begins,
Where executors must answer and withstand
The world beyond the nation’s borders’ winds—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
Envoi:
O steward of a rising nation’s span,
You carried farther than the founders planned;
Through peace and war, through triumph and demand,
You changed the reach of the executive hand—
He leads the nation toward a wider land.
