American Executor: Woodrow Wilson

Matthew R. Callies

From scholar’s halls to the nation’s chair,

He takes the office with a vision clear;

A reformer’s purpose guides his careful care,

A moral voice the public comes to hear.

No crown commands, no ancient rights appear,

Yet ideals give the office greater span—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

The New Freedom calls the state to act,

Against the powers that shape the public field;

He seeks to restore a balanced pact,

Where common interests may be served and healed.

The government becomes a stronger shield—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

The banks are changed, the currency remade,

The Federal Reserve takes lasting form;

A structure built to help the nation’s trade

With greater strength against financial storm.

The laws of commerce are revised and formed,

As federal power takes a broader stand—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

The trusts are challenged through the force of law,

The marketplace receives a closer gaze;

The executive seeks to find a cause

Where competition may survive its days.

Reform becomes the measure of his praise—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

Then war arrives across the ocean’s tide,

And neutrality becomes harder to maintain;

The nation watches as the conflicts widen,

Until the call to arms cannot remain.

He brings the country through a massive strain,

Mobilizing all with a commanding hand—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

The soldiers cross the seas beneath his word,

The factories turn toward a wartime need;

The executive becomes a power heard

In every field where national efforts lead.

A government transformed by urgent deed—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

When victory comes, he seeks a lasting peace,

A world where future wars may be restrained;

The Fourteen Points proclaim a new release,

A system where cooperation may be gained.

The League of Nations stands as what he planned,

A vision reaching far beyond the land—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

Yet Congress holds the power he cannot claim,

And opposition blocks the course he chose;

The Senate will not grant the League its name,

Despite the hopes his diplomacy arose.

The limits of the office are exposed—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

His final years reveal the human cost

Of carrying burdens greater than one man;

A vision pursued, a battle partly lost,

A struggle between ideal and plan.

Yet through his term the presidency can

Become a force for change beyond command—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

So stands the twenty-eighth within the line,

A chief who sought to shape both age and fate;

He made the executive role align

With causes reaching past the state.

The office grew beneath his chosen weight—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

Envoi:

O dreamer of a world remade by hand,

You carried visions farther than the land;

Through triumph, struggle, hope, and command,

You showed how far an executor can stand—

He leads the nation with a visionary hand.

    Matthew, this is another strong entry in the series. Wilson’s idealism comes through clearly, but so does the tension between vision and the limits of actual political power. Excellent write, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛
