Persevere

lonelyraccoon

I wish I could tell my younger self

That things are scary right now

That it is a difficult time

And it does feel as though

There is no way out

But that rock bottom

Does not mean you are stuck

It means that though you

Are at your lowest,

You only have one direction to go

That is up

That does not mean that

The lows will all be behind you

Healing is not linear

As you have heard many times before

But it is not all lows ahead of you

You will face hard times

People that

You thought would stay

Leave

And people that

You thought would leave

Stayed

And from those hard times

Will come happiness

The one that will leave,

Will take the weight with them

That has been crushing your soul,

Robbing you of the peace,

And the room to breathe

With their absence will come

Happiness, an unfiltered joy

Though there is fear,

There is more room for love

And hope to fill the empty space

The one that will stay,

Will be by your side

In a way you never thought

Anyone would be

But they will happily do so

And provide you a much better life

Than you ever thought you deserved

There will be much happier times

With people from your past

And new people that await for you

In the future

Once you overcome this,

Which you will,

You will be capable of incredible things

Your wildest dreams

Will come true

There will be peace

There will be joy

There will be new

There will be old

There will be laughter

There will be tears

But most of all

There will be you

Still here,

Living through it all

And if I could only tell

My younger self one word,

It would be…

Persevere

  • Comment from author about the poem: My life was at a very, very low point shortly before my husband and I got together and got married. After an even shorter amount of time the man who was in my life for 13 years, up and left the family he claimed as his own. Both my husband and ex-stepdad were blessings in disguises for opposite reasons. I am so grateful for my husband's presence in my life and the absence of my ex-stepdad as well, both outcomes were very unexpected. If I could tell anyone who is at their lowest, it would be to presevere. Sounds silly but it's the only way in life I've made it this far!!
