Summer

Sunita

I only liked summer this year

Not for the weather or the heat

The pretty flowers or the beach

I liked this specific summer because it had you in it

It had you in all the best places

All the perfect shapes and forms

All the fate and destiny where our love reforms

I liked this summer for all the hand touching that became more than just a handshake

For all the glances that lingered for a second gaze

For all the smiles reserved for just us

And for the inside jokes no one else understands

Summer has you written all over it

In a big black ink

Even when you’re gone

Tears over my bathroom sink

June will always belong to you

Birthday cake, elevator kiss

August will always be yours

“I love you, but let’s stop this.”

March is where you began and August where we ended

Summer has you written all over it

Prom will be yours too and my black silk dress

Disappointing watermelons too watery for any sense

The park will scream your name so will that bench where we almost kissed

And of course every carnival will have your name tattooed with ease

Every beautiful sky will be captured in my mind

A picture saved along the others I never sent

Not since you stopped being mine

The jean you mentioned you loved

Will always be my favorite one

The way you carried my bag all night

Will always set the bar

Movie theaters will always be yours

And so will vanilla ice cream

Today and tomorrow

Summer has you written all over it.
