The nation falls beneath a burdened sky,
Its banks are closed, its confidence undone;
A people waits, uncertain where to fly,
As hardship spreads beneath the failing sun.
The office calls when hope appears to run,
And he arrives with courage as his brand—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
No crown commands, yet power must arise
To meet a crisis greater than before;
The presidency must now realize
A wider role than those who came before.
The people seek an answer at the door—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
Through fireside words, he speaks across the land,
A voice that reaches homes from coast to coast;
He asks for trust, a faith that they may stand,
And builds a government prepared to host
The burdens of a people nearly lost.
The agencies expand by his command—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
The New Deal reshapes the federal sphere,
With programs built to answer suffering’s call;
The executive grows more present, near,
No longer distant from the lives of all.
The office rises where old limits fall—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
The courts question where his powers extend,
The balance tested between branches three;
The Constitution’s meaning must contend
With what a nation in distress must be.
The presidency seeks authority
To act where desperation has been planned—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
Yet storms beyond the borders soon appear,
And peace gives way to global war and flame;
The commander’s burden grows more severe,
As history calls upon the nation’s name.
He bears the weight of battle’s endless claim—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
The armies march, the factories awake,
The nation turns toward victory and peace;
The alliances that he helps to make
Will shape the world when conflicts finally cease.
The executor becomes the voice of release,
A leader reaching far beyond the land—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
Four times the people grant him their consent,
An unprecedented length of service shown;
The office changes through his firm intent,
Its modern shape through his leadership grown.
The presidency assumes a greater throne,
Though still beneath the law’s enduring strand—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
So stands the thirty-second in the line,
The greatest expansion of executive might;
A figure marked by triumph and design,
Who led through darkness toward a distant light.
His choices remain debated in the sight
Of generations seeking to understand—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
For from his era, every chief who came
Inherited an office transformed and vast;
The presidency no longer held the same
As generations viewed it in the past.
His legacy remains, both first and last—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
Envoi:
O architect of crisis, war, and stand,
You bore the office with an open hand;
You proved that power could reshape the land,
And left a greater executive command—
He leads the nation with an outstretched hand.
