Mermaid in a tank
feet propelling her forward
feeding from the ooh's and ahh's of the crowd
wanting nothing more but to hear
the applause of the crowd.
I am a mermaid
constantly swimming
in patterns that rival diamonds with their splendour
all I need is for you to applaud me
even if I'm drowning
water fills the mermaids lungs
though the audience never notices
because of the barbie smile
plastered on her face
for eternity
I am a mermaid
constantly smiling
teeth glinting in the light of the sun
in a way that rivals the stars
and all I need is for you to applaud me
even if I'm drowning
lungs gasp and gargle
As oxygen runs low
I'm drowning
but your applause feed me
so I will swim for ever and more
because I am a mermaid
and I am loosing everything
to hear you applaud me
one last time.
applaud me while I drown.
applaud me
while I drown.
applaud me

- Comment from author about the poem: this poem is largely about needing others approval even if searching for that is making you feel like you're drowning. i decided then to make the narrator a mermaid, specifically those mermaids that entertain people as a job (do people know what i mean? i cant remember what the job actually if but i thin you can get a clear enough picture) i switch between an un-named narrator and myself throughout this poem because this is something i do, seek approval that is, but sometimes in the search for approval i feel removed from who i am. i wanted this to be my first poem on here because its a poem i dont share enough even though im so proud of it, so i'm giving it it's moment to shine. hope you enjoy this poem
