NOSTALGIA

Saroja

I visited my childhood home,
28 years after,
not because I missed my home,
but because I missed the version of me.

The rooms looked smaller,
the living room longer,
one single wardrobe,
sharing with my older brother.

The backyard was different,
gone was the water well,
sealed forever,
and the cotton tree,
stripped of its roots.

I stood at my bedroom window,
where I used to wait for the darkness,
for the power cuts to swallow up the street,
as darkness meant no books and study.

A table in the corner,
with a study lamp, burning bright yellow,
that had seen countless midnight,
under the hard working eyes,
of my brother.

I visited my childhood home,
because this home called me Putti,
the youngest in the house,
the apple of everyone's eye.

Standing near the gate,
I waited every evening,
for my father's return from work,
waiting for him to say yes,
for me to go play with friends.

Those were the days,
when I was free and loved,
without judgement,
without any responsibility.

I visited my childhood home,
not to see the walls,
but to re-live those moments,
to tell that little girl, you will be fine.

I visited that version of me,
when I lived a life
full of dreams and
endless wonder.

A nostalgic write of childhood and dreams of yesterday. Well done.

There is always something to learn from our childhood. Thank you for reading.

        You are very welcome

Sometimes you have to go back just to reclaim the memories.
Some never go back, but I think your return helped.

It definitely did. Though I went hoping to see the same old structure of trees and open fields, I forgot Iam going after decades and there is no more space left nor a single tree. Despite it still gave me a closure which I left abruptly and never had a chance to go back. Thank you for stopping by to read my poem.

A balanced view of your childhood which all up sounded great. Gave you the kind of start which meant you had a reasonable chance of being able to deliver that message to young Saroja.
          A write I enjoyed.

You have been with MPS for some time, but turn up on page only very occasionally. Can this site not see more of you, please?

I actually created my profile and forgot all about it. Infact I stopped writing all together though used to be a freelance Blog writer. Recently after talking to a therapist I realised that I need to get back to writing and not just for the sake of earning but for the passion of it. So Iam trying my best although in this AI world it's truly tough. But your message is really encouraging and I will definitely try to do more here. Thank you friend!
