Man Without a Country

Michael A. McGuire

So what is it then that entices a man,
to curse his birth name and leave his
native land?

Love? Gold? Fortune and fame?

No! Freedom! No more shackles of repetitious
culture or ways of life!

From birth we are forced into a conformed
pattern: language, food, religion, entertainment
and work!

In each country are sown the seeds from
which men reap the culture bestowed upon
them by their ancestors!

Defiance of tradition is treason!

Yet there are a few men willing to
sacrifice their mortal substance to absorb
other nations, customs, spirits, taboos and
secrets of the living soul!

Those who wish to know the truth; not lies
conjured up to still the inquisitive mind,
cradled by guilt cast upon them in attempts
to belittle their comprehensive spirit!

Very few men reach that silver-lined peak
of salvation. Most look back, question
their climb, then plummet to their death!

Futile attempts made by those in doubt.

Question not your actions, be not swayed by
the frownful envious masses who mock you,
yet make fools of themselves in the end.

Be like a shield in the midst of battle:
feel nothing, repel all! Live, or die trying!

With a painful birth you were born on native
soil but when Death calls you home, may your
ashes be scattered across many continents
and oceans to birth yet another rebellious
Soul to reach new heights of untamed glory!
