Welcome to Ocean Grove, New Jersey

Tristan Robert Lange

high society jesus
does just what pleases
those highfalutin’ sensibilities
of the white porch rhesus

escaping the city diseases
for those godly ocean breezes,
blowing down the pilgrim’s pathway—
did you know?—population increases.

wealthy soul salvation freezes
for serious hotel building—which eases
the financial needs of the town,
material abstinence thenceforth ceases—

still can’t buy wine for cheeses.
sing too loud?—the cop beat seizes
anyone who breaks the serenity code;
the cost to live is what squeezes.

come! but hope no one sneezes
and angers the white rhesus;
you’ll be shown the way out
by high society jesus.
