Beyond the names that fill the rolls of time,
Beyond the crowns and offices that fade,
The charge remains through every age and clime,
A trust received, a duty never stayed.
Some rise through blood, some through the people's aid,
Some through the council, battlefield, or throne,
Some stand where ancient forms have been unknown,
Yet all must answer when the hour demands.
For power is never truly theirs alone,
But placed for a season in their hands—
The charge endures beyond the hand that led.
The scepter breaks, the banners change their hue,
The laws are written, rewritten, and revised;
The forms of rule become both old and new,
As generations see with different eyes.
One claims by birth, another by the wise
Consent of those whose voices grant the right;
One rules by council gathered through the night,
One bears a nation's trust through public will.
The names may vanish from the records' sight,
Yet still the burden calls the ruler still—
The charge endures beyond the hand that led.
The humble steward and the mighty king,
The first who builds and last who must repair,
Each leaves behind the mark of what they bring,
A measure written in the public air.
The victories won, the failures they must bear,
The choices made when paths divide ahead,
Are weighed by those who follow where they tread.
No executor escapes the judgment given,
For every act becomes a page once read,
A fragment of the story carried onward—
The charge endures beyond the hand that led.
The office may outlive the one who stands
Within its walls beneath the watching years;
The seal may pass to other waiting hands,
The world may shift through triumphs and through fears.
The future comes with questions none yet hears,
And those who rise must choose the road they make.
The promises they honor or forsake
Will shape the memories of their command.
For every ruler holds, before they wake,
A history waiting for their hand—
The charge endures beyond the hand that led.
So let the future bring whatever name
The ages choose for those who bear the role;
Let crowns or constitutions mark the frame,
Let new designs replace the forms of old.
The task remains: to guard what must be whole,
To serve the people, realm, or common good;
To face the storms as every leader should,
And leave the world improved or diminished.
For none can know the measure they have stood
Until the final judgment has been finished—
The charge endures beyond the hand that led.
Envoi:
O hands yet waiting for the years ahead,
Receive the trust that countless others bore;
Remember all the paths the past has spread,
And learn from those who walked before your door—
The charge endures beyond the hand that led.
