I may not be around since reality loves to buckle and collapse at the most inconvenient times. I will eventually get back with you, once I conquer whatever is before Me making Me absent. But until then, wish Me luck, for I will need all I may muster.
Smile for the lens, straighten up, play nice,
Every little gesture gets collected twice.
Wave to the watcher, adjust your face,
Welcome to freedom with a tracking device in place.
They don't need chains when the ceiling has eyes,
Don't need a warden when the software decides.
You learn what expression is safest to wear,
Then call it authentic because nobody cares.
Step into frame, cue the manufactured grin,
Hide every fracture underneath the skin.
Give them the version that's polished and tame,
Congratulations, citizen, you've mastered the game.
We put on a show when the camera comes near,
Turn truth into theater and comfort into fear.
If performance becomes the language we know,
How long till sincerity has nowhere to go?
A joke gets rehearsed before leaving the tongue,
A thought gets inspected before it is sung.
The pause gets suspicious, the silence looks strange,
And spontaneity starts requiring a name.
You don't have to lie if you never confess,
Just edit your edges and call it success.
Trim out the anger, delete the bizarre,
Make yourself marketable right where you are.
Every hallway becomes a miniature stage,
Every sidewalk auditioning person and age.
The stranger beside you might capture your face,
While some distant database remembers the place.
We used to find corners where candor could breathe,
A back room, a basement, a forest of trees.
Two people could whisper with nothing to prove,
Say something forbidden and simply just move.
But shadows get brighter, the corners get thin,
The dark gets a sensor installed from within.
The quietest refuge acquires a new ear,
And privacy shrinks by another inch each year.
So people become actors without getting paid,
Improvising personas they've carefully made.
Their smiles have credentials, their laughter has terms,
Their personalities wrapped up in digital worms.
What happens to honesty once every wall
Can witness the stumble, the whisper, the fall?
What happens to truth when confession feels risky,
And every unscripted remark becomes evidence-worthy?
Maybe rebellion is choosing a pause,
Refusing to decorate every private thought.
Maybe the boldest thing left to defend
Is speaking like nobody's waiting to send.
Not reckless confession, not foolish display,
But keeping some portion of self unbetrayed.
A chamber inside that remains unrecorded,
A place where the human is still unconverted.
Because cameras can capture the shape of a face,
A microphone harvest the sound of a phrase.
Algorithms measure your habits and pace,
But none of them own what you mean in the space.
Unless we surrender that final frontier,
The unmonitored thought that can form without fear.
The strange little sentence you don't need to share,
The truth that survives because nobody's there.
So here's the punchline beneath all the chrome:
A surveillance society doesn't need a dome.
Give everybody reason to monitor self,
And eventually cages construct themselves.
No prison can function more smoothly than one
Where prisoners polish the bars for fun.
No censor works harder than people who learn
To silence themselves before questions return.
So smile for the camera, perform for the feed,
Give them impeccable evidence of your agreed.
Play your assigned role with impeccable grace,
Then wonder why nobody speaks face to face.
And somewhere beneath all the polished disguise,
A stubborn old question refuses to die:
If every moment requires us to perform,
When does being human become nonconform?
Not every truth needs an audience's gaze.
Not every thought needs a permanent trace.
Some things require darkness to remain sincere,
Some words need a whisper that surveillance can't hear.
But even those corners are fading from sight,
As technology follows the dark into night.
So guard what is human before it is priced,
Before authenticity becomes an obsolete device.
Because once every shadow is forced into light,
And every private impulse is processed outright,
The greatest deception won't come from the screen:
It'll be convincing ourselves
that the performance was real.

- Comment from author about the poem: For those of you that are increasingly becoming more anxious about the state of increased surveillance we are living in today. You are not alone in feeling absolutely alienated and distrusting. That is actually a normally feeling to feel. It's a scary world out there, and humans are making it even more scary by indulging in their extreme paranoia.
