I watched you create distance
Between our present and the future
we once imagined for ourselves.
Just two dumb kids, who thought
loving each other is enough
to break through space and time.
How naive and wonderful.
I loved you even though I didn’t know
the meaning of the word or how to show
the love I had. That endless pit.
I’m sorry, my dear, for acting like I didn’t care.
I’m sorry, my love, for making you scared of demons that haunt me
and break through my walls.
I’m sorry, sweetie, for making everything worse.
I’m sorry, honey, for everything I’ve done.
I’m sorry, lovely, for thinking I was the one.
You chose yourself and that’s okay.
You chose another and that makes me say
the things I’m terrified of saying out loud even to God.
I watched you create distance and that’s okay,
but I’ve yet to realize my hands were the ones
who brought you through Hell
and helped you lift the anchor and move away.
Because fighting my demons left me hollow
Because fighting my thoughts brought too much sorrow.
Our story is one of many who will be lost in winds
That carry whispers over seas.
Our story is one of many who will be lost in time
And I’m sorry, honey, but I’ll always think you were the one
And pray that waves will grant me just another glimpse
Another glimpse of voice
that meant so much and brought me back to earth.
Now just a ghost that keeps my demons company.
