A Deep Well

Shahla Latifi

Within me
lies a well
as deep as the soul of a garden,
leading to the sea.
Fed by the tears of my past;
I can command any light—
or any darkness—
to journey
through my chest,
flow within my veins,
caress my hair,
rest upon my skin,
and return—again and again—
bearing the sweet melody of dawn’s birds
and the chiaroscuro of daybreak
down into my deep well.
