The Sky Is On Fire

Anthony Hanible

The sky is on fire

Not with wrath

Not with war

But with wild tongues

Of gold and scarlet

Licking the ribs of evening

Clouds become embers

Drifting slow

Their edges glowing

Like secrets

Too beautiful to hide

The sun

A weary king

Lowers its burning crown

Into the waiting sea

And the horizon

Holds its breath

Birds stitch dark silhouettes

Through the blaze

Tiny shadows

Crossing a cathedral

Of flame

For one impossible moment

The world forgets its sorrows

Parking lots

Rooftops

Highways

Oceans

All bathed

In the same holy fire

And every face turned upward

Wears the same expression

Wonder

The sky is on fire

And nothing is burning

Yet somehow

Everything

Is glowing
