I'm trying to find my way back.

Friendship

I'm trying to find my way back.

Thirteen and a half years of gray,
A stranger walking far away,
Through foreign lands of noise and stone,
Where I became so much my own.

Yet somewhere back the compass broke,
Beneath a heavy, patient cloak.
I left the light so long ago,
Wrapped in a persistent, quiet woe.

A map torn up, a fading grace,
I search the mirror for my face.
Where did I leave the quiet mind?
What was the joy I left behind?

The things that made the spirit soar,
I haven’t touched in years, or more.
I lived for others, walked their beat,
And lost the rhythm of my feet.

Thirteen and a half. The number aches.
It’s heavy work, what longing takes.
I want to cross the border line,
And claim the self that once was mine.

To find the peace I used to know,
Before the rivers ceased to flow.
I’m turning back, though paths are deep—
I have a soul I swore to keep.
