I used to be an evil man
But not like at the present
Because Jesus came and saved my life
And showed me how He was reverent
This girl had a broken heart
Ever since I met her
The dark sad look upon her eyes
A grievous way to detect her
I listened with a caring heart
When she spoke of all her sorrow
And I always agreed when she asked me
If we could meet again tomorrow
She told me how badly she was treated
As tears rolled down her eyes
I comforted her and consoled her
And all she said I memorized
One day she came to me again
And spoke of heavy sins
That someone close to her before
Had done to her again and again
She broke down into intense sobs
As she clung to my chest
I gently stroked her hair and back;
I was her place of rest
She told me about the voices
And I was filled with indignation
Knowing how unfair it was for her
To suffer those sensations
I told her to trust me and I said
“Devils, get out in Jesus name!”
She sobbed so loud as they went out
She said “I feel better now, it’s not the same!”
I told her I was there for her
And I’ll always be the same
I’ll be by her side when things are bad
And when they’re going great
“...always here to listen to you and help your heart heal…”
I told her she was a special girl
That deserved better than what she used to feel
I felt tension leave her body as she melted into my hug
I said “I’ll always protect you, so you are safe… safe and sound and snug.”
Then by the Holy Ghost I began to pray for her in tongues
The tears on her face began to dry
As she rested her head upon my lungs
I said “You know it isn’t only me but Jesus is also there…”
“…to protect you and meet all your needs anytime and anywhere.”
She said “You’re not like other men.”
And she softly smiled
“You actually love me for real. I haven't seen a real good man in a while.”
She leaned into my warm embrace
And I made a solid promise… that my whole life I’d serve her
The way Christ did for me at my lowest...
I used to be a rebel, a liar, and a fraud
But now I can heal a wounded soul
Because I’m a son of God

- Comment from author about the poem: 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." Luke 10:19 "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." 2 Corinthians 4:6–7 "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."
