Fascinating colors

NafisaSB

Is not man exaggerating a lot

When he gives fantastic names to something he has bought

Its hard to find someone who calls a spade, a spade

For the advent of new words had been introduced in every trade.

Take the world of clothes for instances

Are you prepared for the names they do give

To the different shades and hues

That in your imagination live?

They call white – ‘frost white’

Even ‘coconut white’ would do

Pearl’s yet another name

For the same set of hue.

Peppermint green is now in vogue

But there are so many sorts of green

In the peppermints that we do eat

So how to determine the sheen?

‘Dawn pink’ is popular with the teenagers now

Who greet it with an explosive ‘wow’

But what I just can’t imagine is

How dawn being orangish, could be branded pink??

Another name that puzzles me a lot

And indeed touches a really raw spot

Is ‘gay blue’ – how can one be gay if the blues are around him

At least in the use of words couldn’t man be proper and prim ?

Pray, tell me also what ‘fantasy’ is

Is ‘fanfare’ a colour somewhat similar to this

And then there’s ‘vapour’ which troubles me too

For how could man know, its very exact hue?

And what about ‘fresh cream’

I thought it was a dish

And if there is a ‘kingfisher’ blue

Why not something alluding to fish?

Cloud grey, orchid and delphinium blue

Are some of the shades that are now on view

While bitter lemon, pistachio, almond and musk melon

Are colors, not eatables, that would entrance even Helen..

‘charcoal’ and ‘steel blue’ have succeeded in making me mad

‘tusk ivory’ was another that exposed man’s fad

And another last question, before my list is over

Does ‘spring’ depict a green colour, or that of a fruit or flower?

I don't care for labels personally, you have brought a great point of view to the service, I don't see colour I see the depth of a human or object of beauty, I see the colours then. Nature in Tuscany is spectacular in colour all year round but especially in autumn.

Good day. You are indeed lucky to have a profusion of natural beauty and colorful flora around you. Enjoy them ✌️💅yes now I too see the basic beauty of a person rather than what they choose to wear or exhibit

I love the subject addressed in this write where labels are used to market and so it is with everything else in this capitalistic world where pleasure itself has a price and must be marketed under an esthetically pleasing label. Nicely written it makes a lot of sense.

Thanks. I marvel at the originality of some of the names for sure😱😋

          Most welcome Nafisa

          C'mon, men love exaggerating things.
Look what happened when the metric system came in, finally man made the whole six inches.
How many times has the shop assistent told you that a particular colour suits you eyes, even though you were wearing sun glasses.
The best is definitely work titles. I am not a road sweeper, I am a litter engineer.
Need to take my Rolls Royce down to the washing engineer now.

Yes the marketing is what sells the goods - exaggeration is common place

I’m bald, Safina...perhaps I should start calling it “polished moonstone” and charge people extra for the view. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

good write depicting the way things are advertised these days

              • NafisaSB

Actually this was written many years ago and just saw it again while browsing through my old poems and found it relevant today too- hence shared🙏

My wife thinks I'm colour blind - I can't tell white from white, or black from black.

                    • NafisaSB

Well now you can read out any of the matching colors closest to what you see and impress her😁

                    • Doggerel Dave

Quite recently, and I sit in wonderment, I have been advised that there are many shades of black. For beginners it is only necessary to go as far as Word and its offerings.

You can find absolute sympathy with your complaint here, Safina.

                      • NafisaSB

Yes if you Google it or check it up, Not just black but each color goes from light to darker shade so instead of vibgyor we have umpteen shades and one marvels at man’s creativity. Now AI may take over and I wonder what they will answer when asked to name a variety of colors . I am not complaining though- nice to have dresses in a hue that no one else has🤔 😛😂

Woah you've touched on trendy mod nicknames they give to colors these days. Here the rage seems to be fuchsia pink or sun yellow. I have seen pink sunsets, but yeah not pink sunrises. Kudos for a fantastic poem!

Thanks dear. 🙏🏼So glad to read something from your side after a while. I agree with you
Look forward to seeing more of your contributions. Keep them coming 🤗💐
