The rain withdrew from the mountain, leaving the soaked trees glistening beneath a newly brightened sky. The air had been cleared, and every leaf held a bit of light.
A symphony rose from the rain-drenched earth. As darkness gathered among the trees, thousands of coquís began to sing, and the mountain reverberated with a music born from the damp shadow. Beneath the chorus of thousands of coquís, the mountain quietly surrenders. In her surrender, she breathes undisturbed. With every breath, she yields to the melodies within her.
Perhaps she has been keeping, within her womb, the ancient songs of generations of coquís and the other creatures that inhabit her forests. And when the rain returns, she opens her chest and releases the ancient songs she has kept within her.
Here, in the quiet of my room, I sit and write—listening as the damp night breathes outside my window, tracing each melody as it settles into the page.

- Comment from author about the poem: It has been raining throughout the week, but today, Saturday, the rain came down especially hard. I found myself wondering whether the electricity would go out. As I listened to the rain, I felt inspired to write something about it. What began as a simple response to the weather gradually became a prose poem, leading my imagination beyond the rain itself and into the ancient songs of the mountain. RRN
