Homeward Bound

Tony Grannell

The pale orb in full rapport,
reflected light through night explore.
On rippling seas from yon to shore,
make way to home by sale and oar.

Taut the ropes, the timbers bound
in ancient art through toil resound.
On oceans calm and fierce, she sound,
abides the breeze when passage found.

Together we, we haul alone,
hemp and timber, skin and bone.
Cold the nights, the morn atone,
to cast again and reap the foam.

Bear the squalls, the swells beware,
hold the nerves and make repair.
Read the past for futures there,
the ocean’s moods can curse and swear.

For held she fast, my fateful craft,
braved the storms and stayed the wrath.
Oh, mighty thee from fore to aft,
we be as one in honest graft.

Our labours end to tack our sail,
homeward bound, pray kindly gale.
The northern star to never fail,
our friend above, our Holy Grail.

Tonight the ocean placid be,
the pale orb horizons see.
With peace of mind to home and thee,
my maiden fare, my haven she.
