You touched me like dawn,
gentle and uncertain
as if even sunlight
was scared of breaking me.

- Comment from author about the poem: This poem is a memory I’m keeping safe. The relationship is over, but the way he cared for me was real, and I don’t want that to disappear. Writing it down lets the tenderness stay, even though he is gone. It’s also my way of saying goodbye without anger. I’m not blaming him here. I can miss him and be grateful for him at the same time, without having to decide if the breakup was good or bad. It reminds me of what I deserve. I now know what it feels like to be handled gently, and that becomes my standard. In the future, I can look at how someone treats me and remember that soft care is possible. It also shows me how I saw myself. When I wrote that even sunlight was scared of breaking me, I was admitting that I felt fragile. Putting that feeling into a poem lets me look at it from the outside, and it feels a little lighter.
