Shutdown

Jasmine Swift

Protocol to shut down:

Delete the old memories.

Somehow forget whether the reason was you or me.

Code name: DISTANCE

He said it to sugarcoat his resistance.

“You should’ve texted like before”

Not even that could mend the armor anymore.

He was chaos disguised as chivalry.

Bedroom eyes like stone cold remedy.

System Error.

What was the name?

The feeling of when he remembered my name.

Burning the files.

I’ve disconnected with all my past lives.

To finish the shutdown,

Choose your heart’s fate.

Find another love, or let the system break.

You’ve chosen to break.

Tell every therapist your guard cannot be shaved.

Drowning in the breakup.

Love closes, beating stops, no medicine was strong enough.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is one that I wrote after a breakup I went through after 2 years of that relationship. When it happened, I was confused, hurt, and conflicted as to why he left. I never got an explanation, but maybe, writing is all the reasons I need to know why it wasn't right for me.
