The Way I Love

Black Willow

Not many people

approve the way I love.

They find it so unwise

to give out a whole heart.

But I reason: I was nourished

by poetry, and religion

The only way I could give it

is sacrificial devotion.

My mother fears they'd despise me

Oh, so was the Son of Glory!

My ladies wish I had some sense

alas! I'm only seventeen.

The only thing I would not give

is this flesh and its misery.

In anguish, one day I will learn

Grief is the only thing returned.
