There is a tall skinny spirit that lurks around our reservation.
It hides deep in the mountains and
Comes out during our escapes.
When I was 13,
My friends said they saw it in their dreams.
They said it stood as tall as my two-story house.
They said that it would cup its hands,
Peering through the window,
Looking for me.
Some elders told us kids that
It's been around for a while, and actually that
Soon after the white man came,
It was born from our pain.
It offers to carry the weight,
In exchange for our bones.
And ever since they kicked it out of ceremony--
It roams our reservation,
Making friends with the lonely.

- Comment from author about the poem: There has been a lot of bad news from back home recently. I'm exploring the idea about this "spirit" that takes advantage of people hurting and convincing them to leave our physical world. This is a very rough first draft, but I just wanted to get it out for now. Def will be actively working on this throughout the next few years.
