A short distance away
Across the road from my home
In the trees behind the bungalows opposite
A couple of Squirrels seem to roam
Happy as they can be they seem to care not a jot
Dashing about here there and everywhere at all times of the day
Flying through the branches without a care in the world
Its seems they spend most of their lives just being at play
Always dashing off somewhere I just don’t know how they do it
Their bushy tails waving in the wind leaping from one tree to the next
Hurtling around at break neck speeds as they go
As I watch I am just mystified and complexed
As they disappear from the trees, down to the ground they go foraging
Hunting for food where they may have buried it some time ago
They must have store ready for winter they have collected all Summer
And kept underground so they have food for the winter buried under the prevailing Snow
Their little hands and feet look a bit like ours to a layman like me
Obviously handy when they are leaping around high up of the ground
Today I saw about eight of them racing all over the Old Oak Tree darting here and there
Though through all the excitement I did not hear a sound
How they never lose their footing or mishandle a branch or two
As I watched intently from on the ground way below
Suddenly they have disappeared from view
So quickly do they move about, I think to myself I never saw them go
One minute they are there and then they have disappeared so fast
And I am left alone standing on the ground below.
A little while later two of them returned
Or should I say five because they had little three ones in tow
It was a wonderful sight to see them all together
Dad, Mum and the little ones all three in a row
They disappeared as quickly as they had first appeared
But I felt honored to have seen them all together
It left me with a nice warm glow and I hope they stay near
And I will see them again whatever the weather.

You bring this to life.
A wonderful observation put to ink. I too have watched squirrels and how they are so territorial chasing others off. How they hide far more than they need and forget where they have put it latter. I have watched then chassed by a mocking bird when it got too close to the birds nest. The beg for food but never seem to be satisfied over time growing a bit too accustomed to man. I came home one day to find my five year old playing with one feeding it, petting it he took it in the house and it was the devil to get it back out.
