The Lantern

Poet's Dream

The lantern at the end of the sidewalk

always stays on at night

for the dreamers and the drop-outs

for the studious and the stragglers

for the average and the star

it keeps its light on for those who need it

for it might be the only warmth they got

The lantern at the end of the sidewalk

stays bright no matter the season

Through rain and snow

when its top is white and its pole is rusted

Through falling leaves and warm humid days

when its metal is hot iron to the touch

Standing tall through the weather

for the neurotics and the hippies

for the reserved and the flamboyant

for you and for me

it keeps its light on for those who need it

for it might be the only warmth they got

Metaphoric this poem speaks of light and darkness and cool and warm. Nicely done
