The Day the World Forgot My Name

Dev Parth

I have often wondered
what would happen
if I disappeared for a day.

Not died.
Not left a letter.
Not given anyone a reason to worry.
Just disappeared.

Would the morning arrive differently?
Would the tea grow cold
in the same forgotten cup?
Would the streets remember
the sound of my footsteps?

Perhaps someone would notice
the silence where my laughter used to be.
Perhaps someone would open our old conversations,
read a message twice,
and wonder why they suddenly missed me.

But the world would keep moving.

The trains would arrive.
The rain would fall.
Someone would fall in love
without knowing I had ever existed.

And somewhere, a stranger
would laugh at something beautiful
while I remained absent
from every story being told.

That thought used to frighten me.
Now, I find something strangely freeing in it.

The world does not need me
to keep turning.

But while I am here,
I can make someone's world
a little easier to live in.

I can listen when nobody else does.
I can remember the little things
people assume everyone forgets.
I can leave a little kindness
in places I may never visit again.

Maybe being remembered
was never the point.

Maybe the point was to be present
while I still had the chance.

To look someone in the eyes
and let them feel seen.
To say the words
that should never have to wait
for a farewell.

Because one day,
whether I am remembered or not,
my chair will belong to someone else.
My room will hold different conversations.
And the world will slowly learn
to live without the sound of my name.

But somewhere, in the lives I touched,
something might remain.

A little courage.
A gentler way of speaking.
A belief that they mattered
on a day when they had forgotten.

And perhaps that is enough.

I do not need the world
to remember my name forever.

I only hope that, while I was here,
someone felt a little less alone
because I existed.

And if even one person
carries a little more kindness
because our paths once crossed,

then perhaps
I was never truly absent
from the world
I briefly passed through.
