Still alive

Carlos Alberto BUSTILLOS

STILL ALIVE

STILL ALIVE

Life has shaken me to the core,

I have grown old through blows of reality.

My heart is too vast, it cannot fit,

I no longer fit inside my own body, I have let myself go,

you know, I don't care, I am not immortal,

my soul is longing to detach.

In this life,

in this suffering,

I put on a brave face, and I forget,

I step away from my own life and slip out.

I have stepped outside of my life,

I begin to weave poems,

and for a moment, I feel well.

I cease to be that sorrowful being, and I write words,

words so I won't feel so lonely without those who are gone,

I transform into anything at all to tell what I need to say,

I let the words take flight, and I let life stop drowning in sorrows.

What does it matter if it has no rhymes,

if I only need the current I carry inside to pour out?

They are just simple words to keep from fainting in this life,

in this life that shouldn’t matter to anyone, because I am free to dream.

In my poems, I dream of a song,

that might be a balm for living,

for a few moments...
